1 John 1:5-7 This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all. 6 So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth. 7 But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin. (NLT)
The Bible often uses the analogy of light and darkness to teach us spiritual truths. Here John states straight out, GOD IS LIGHT.
If we understand light, we will understand truths about God.
THREE TRUTHS ABOUT LIGHT
- Light Is Very Good (v. 5)
There are many good benefits to light.
God is utterly Good.
James 1:17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. (NLT)
Every good thing comes from God.
Psalm 34:8 Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him. (NIV)
Every day God wants us to taste and experience His Goodness.
- Light Exposes Darkness (v. 6)
The “Cockroach Syndrome” - People living in darkness and sin want to hide from the light.
John 3:19-20 And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil. 20 All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed. (NLT)
People are afraid of God since He is light. We don't want our sins, wrongs, short-comings, and secrets exposed.
One big problem with this attitude: We will never experience the Light, taste God's Goodness, or have an awesome relationship with Him.
- Light Cleanses Us (v. 7)
Having our darkness exposed is a good thing because it leads to our darkness and sin being cleansed and healed.
The root of darkness is sin. Bringing light to society starts with us!
Question: Do you want to live like a cockroach? Or be free?
1 John 1:8-9 If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. 9 But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.
Psalm 27:1 The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?
Taste God's Goodness right now:
Confess your sins, wrongs, pain, short-comings to God. Receive cleansing by the blood of Jesus. Acknowledge all your sins have been washed away!
Be free to be all God created you to be!
